| St Mary in the Castle now has a new lease of life as an arts centre, being let on a one-year temporary arrangement to Barbara Rogers, a writer and arts lover who has also run meetings venues over the last ten years and has also run a cafe in Hastings (Heaven and Earth, then renamed Blue Skies). The long-term aim is to give it to a youth scheme called Myplace run by Hastings Trust, although they have yet to define exactly how they plan to make it work - they claim it will remain open to the public while functioning as a dedicated youth place. It is important for people to use St Mary in the Castle, which is now available for bookings with the auditorium let either as ground floor only, as the full auditorium with gallery seating around 600; a gallery and crypt available for art exhibitions or other uses; a very pleasant cafe open during the day, and available for bookings in the evening; and two nicely refurbished meeting or class rooms on the ground and first floor of Pelham Crescent. Booking fees are very reasonable at the moment since the emphasis has to be on bringing the building back into use. All details are available on Barbara's website, www.stmaryinthecastle.com . phone number is 01424-717592 and email is contact@stmaryinthecastle.com . |
